Useless

Completely, totally useless.  That’s me today.  Josh was up (again) last night and to throw in a little more misery, Jake decided to get up as well.  I took Josh and Ryan took Jake and neither of us slept.

There’s no gas in the Carolina’s.  I was given a prescription for Joshua last night (he has a sinus infection) and I couldn’t even go fill it until Ryan got home because my car is on E and I can’t even fill it.  The one station with gas has over an hour wait at all times.  There’s a 20 gallon limit and the lines of cars run all the way to the interstate exit.

So Ryan had to call in today.  For one, we’re both absolutely exhausted and since I can’t drive my car, I needed his to take Jake to school and Josh to the doctor.

Naturally, it’s pouring rain today.  Charlotte, North Carolina, where it rains maybe once a month if we’re lucky.  Today, it pours.

After getting Jake to school we headed to the GI doc for Josh.  We waited about an hour in the waiting room to be told we’re S.O.L.   It’s obvious Josh has reflux and they can’t find anything else wrong.  The best advice he could give was to put him in a room as far away from Jake as possible and have him cry it out.

He said part of the problem is that he spent his whole life in pain (couldn’t poop for the first 4 months) and he got accustomed to crying at night when he was uncomfortable.  Because his room is next to Jake’s, we always rush to make sure his crying doesn’t wake him.

We told the doc we’re not comfortable with the amount of medicine we have to give him and got permission to scale it back gradually.  We feel it doesn’t make much of a difference so we don’t want to waste anymore time or money on it.

So the plan is let him cry a little for the next 3 days.  If he was waking because he wants to be comforted, we’re being told that he should start sleeping better after 3 days.  If he’s genuinely in pain after that time, we’re basically screwed because the doctors (we’ve seen 3 total) said some kids just can’t be helped and have to “ride it out”.

At least it’s Friday.  With Ryan home, I took a nap.  Laundry’s getting done and I vacuumed the whole house (takes an hour to vacuum this place!).  I have a frozen pizza to cook for supper so I’m practically on vacation.

Thanks to everyone for their warm thoughts and suggestions.  Wish me luck this weekend and I’ll let you know how everything goes.
