Twitter vs. Facebook and Other Non-Related Items

facebook-vs-twitterI just wrote a big ass post about social media, then I realized I don’t have enough social media knowledge to warrant a blog post, so I’m writing this instead.

The jist of it was me asking how you use the two to draw readers to your blog.  I don’t want to say ‘traffic’, because when I think of traffic I think of clutter and congestion.  I mean readers.  I don’t want thousands of people coming to my  websites to simply give me numbers, I want to make friends and share all this shit rattling around in my head with you.

I’m not sure what I recently got on my hands but immediately rubbing my eyes was a bad idea.

My hubs is out of town for a whopping 36 hours and I’m already bored.  I thought about cleaning but quickly brushed that thought aside.  I need to write the Wii Mommies newsletter but I’m not a fan of newsletters, so I’m really putting it off.

I got a tiny computer- one of those netbooks- and while I love it because it’s simple for travel and cute as a button,  I screw up typing on the tiny keys and mouse pad and it hurts my back from being hunched over it all the time.  I wonder if that means I’m on the computer too much.

Pa-shaw.  As if there is such a thing.

So back to social media.  I’m not really that knowledgeable about it, but I’m a part of it.  I don’t have anything to sell and my only agenda is to make as many friends as possible so I always have a free place to stay when I travel.

I got on Facebook way back when it was for high school students and basically ignored it until 4 months ago.  I was a Myspacer, but Myspace is lame now so I deleted that account.  What I like about Facebook is the SMS capability.  I can get status updates from select people but if I post something, I can read all replies people post.

With Twitter (@Momspective), I always thought the idea of randomly spouting off 140 characters of bullshit was unappealing until I realized that that’s what I do with every instant message and cell text I’ve ever sent, so why stop there?

When I first started tweeting, I thought I should only show my blog related stuff.  I had no concept of what people looked at or how the stream flowed yet somehow people followed me.  Thanks bunches for following me.

I only recently decided to talk about whatever flows into this whacked out mind of mine and am finding I’m having a great time doing it.  I’ll tweet something I’m sure will end up offending someone and I’ll be pleasantly surprised when I find most of you get my jokes.

The only ish I have with Twitter is that while you can choose who’s updates go to your non-app phone (I use a Verizon LG NV2 and love it), you can’t see every @ reply tweeted to you, so I end up missing a lot.

I don’t know.  I really don’t have anything to offer with this post.  I’m just giving my opinion.  I think being on both is a great idea.  With one, it’s pictures and (stupid) games and updates and with the other, it’s one giant orgy of an instant message.

Plus, it’s always fun to tell people I’m messing with my Twitter

  • I like Twitter and blogging better than Facebook, I think… I was using it for personal stuff (Facebook), but now I’m bored out of my mind there, lol.

Still, so many people use it that I’m sure I’m missing something…

I fbook like I tweet now, I just like it a lot because it’s cell SMS friendly. I also like seeing posts, updates and pictures all in one place.

  • I suppose I’m going to have to make time to hang out on Twitter…you know, so I can read when you’re messing with your Twitter…(snicker!)

    Julie Reply:

I can’t believe you don’t. Everyone loves you and it’s really a great way to constantly communicate with your friends and readers.

Here’s a question for you. Do your twitter updates also update your facebook status? I presently have mine set that way but I think I might twitter more if it didn’t go to fb too. For some reason I don’t want my FB friends to think they are going to be overwhelmed with updates. What do you think?

  • Karla007 says:

I like both. I usually just follow on Twitter and respond every once in awhile. I love FB. There are a few, and I mean few, non stupid games I play to keep me occupied but most of my friends are on there and it’s easy to follow them and to see the pics they post.

  • Kari says:

I like FB and twitter alike and for different reasons. When I update twitter it also updates FB. I’m not entirely sure I like that because I probably twitter less. I don’t want to overwhelm my FB friends. What do you think about that?

    Julie Reply:

I only update both with the same thing if I think I’m being hilarious. Non-tweeters won’t get the @ thing in there and I think tweeters are already seeing the tweet, so the FB should be different.

  • briana says:

you mean messing with your tweeter. my aunt calls twitter “my tweeter.” it has me rolling every time. sounds do dirty. lol.

  • Casey says:

I have a Facebook account but I won’t link my blog up since that would be combining two worlds that I’d like to keep separate. I hate Twitter, I don’t get it.

Too much computer use? Hahhahah. My eyes hurt most nights though..

    Julie Reply:

yeah, my eyes (and back) hurt like a bitch last night. WAY too much time online.

I really havent gotten into either of them that much…have accounts…I pretty much just use twitter for twitter parties…facebook I check on and make some comments on others but rarely post anything myself. I am not a cell phone person though either. I have one for emergencies and a quick call home if we need something, but I hate being on the phone when I am away. I have never once sent a text message and the ones I have received I wish people would just email me instead.

  • I only use FB for personal friends, so I don’t use it much to promote my site or to connect with other mom bloggers. I have fallen in love with Twitter over the last few weeks. Like you, I like spouting off my random thoughts. I also feel like I have more of a mom support group on Twitter. There are things I put on Twitter that I wont on FB, because of my man friends on FB. They don’t want to hear about me pumping boob milk. :)

  • Dana says:

I started out using twitter as a business tool. But, after reading other people’s posts, that gets old pretty quick. I still plug myself, shamelessly, but I like the interaction between people more. I am on facebook also, but I post differently there. More personal interaction I guess. I can spend a lot of time in both places, but I am trying to limit myself. I really do need to get SOME work done LOL!

  • Great post, Julie!

I like Facebook for keeping up with real-life friends, but Twitter is also about blogging and fun with online friends for me. I do not have Twitter update FB because I am more purposeful about what I write/post there. I also block just about every stupid app there is when I get invitations or see it in my home feed.

I used to like FB more before they changed the interface this last time, but now I don’t really find it as easy to find things.

  • Oh no…I think I may have to get on Twitter. (that even sounds funny) I have to say the idea of it kind of intimidates me:) Is it time to let my guard down and just do it?

  • Kat says:

I tried to give up twitter, but I was like a crack addict trying to get a fix when I deleted my acct. Soooo, I am back there now. I know, no will power.

  • I love Twitter. I find myself reading Twitter a lot more lately than Facebook. I’m really tired of people’s statuses on FB, “I worked today, now I’m tired…blah friggin blah.” Although I do stalk FB to look at people’s pictures.

I’ve found some many new and interesting people and companies through Twitter. That I would have never met before..

  • Kyooty says:

I use FB for my family and friends and some membersof some mommy groups I’ve been chatting and emailing for the last 9yrs. I use Twitter for entertainment and my blogger readers or listeners. :) I use my computer for both because I don’t own a cellphone

  • Anissa says:

I don’t use facebook. I only have my blog, twitter(which I seem to forget about) and blog catalog.
I use to have a my space account but deleted it!

  • Healthy Moms says:

Social media is very useful for attracting readers to your blog. Blogging is all about interacting with people with similar interests and so are all those social media sites. I am a member of several of them and try my best to visit all of them and make new friends. Great article!

  • Thanks for posting, I very much enjoyed reading your newest post. I think you should post more frequently, you evidently have talent for blogging!

  • Messing with your Twitter! rofl…you’re killin’ me.

  • I honestly just write, that’s it. I talk on Facebook and Twitter for the talk and comradery, and hang out in a couple forums and ning groups to talk and “meet” people. I write for the sake of writing, and am still baffled that I get people reading what I write and liking it enough to come back.

I honestly think Twitter and Facebook kill blog reading, because they’re getting to know us that way instead of reading us, y’know?

    What do you think?

    Julie Reply:

I think they can entice people over to you blog and it’s another way to make friends and have a good time socializing, but I do think that Twitter has reached it’s peak (Oprah killed it) and we’re going to find bloggers reaching out to each other in different ways.

  • Extreme John says:

I have been through the same phases, first MySpace which is now nothing more than a royal pain. Than Facebook, I don’t do “games” online and hate the invites of Facebook. I started using Twitter probably around 4-6 months ago and love it, just wish I remembered to Tweet more often when I am out and about.

  • I use both, but find twitter can be overwhelming to keep up with. I do sometimes find great articles on there. fb is amazing for finding long lost friends and great for posting the zillions of family photos I take. I enjoy blogging most and I feed my blog to both.

BTW I left you an award on my blog. Pop by when you can.
    Have a great weekend!

  • I am new to twitter and still find it confusing, there is so much that I can’t keep up. But I am trying and hope to catch on soon. I am sure I will love it once I do.

  • Heidi L says:

We love Twitter! and We love Facebook! hard to decide which one we like the most. When we first encountered twitter we thought umm…why would anyone do this? This is crazy it’s a bunch of people talk to nobody…now we’re addicted…oh well :)
