Hell Yeah, I’m Talking Football!

Today is a huge day for football.  It also marks the end of the Momspective Fantasy Football Training for this year.  I think as the years progress, we’ll see more people joining up, since I’ll be making a few exciting changes.

Of course, my point in creating this league is to help women strengthen their relationships with their husbands/boyfriends by learning more about the NFL.  Some of the players this year knew and loved football, but wanted to get to know what the big deal is behind their spouses love for fantasy football while others who knew nothing about the sport used this as a tool to learn about the sport and show that they want to make an effort to understand the season that takes our men from us for two, sometimes three days a week.

This season, I had three training leagues and I’m so impressed with those who stuck it through to the end.  I’ve heard wonderful things about what it’s done for both the individual playing as well as their relationships.

In the first league, I actually made it to the playoffs but lost to “Steelers Girl”.  She absolutely beat my ass with a final score of 105 to 58.   Not humiliating.  Nope.  Not at all *sniff*.  Momspective II didn’t have me anywhere near the playoffs.  The two teams competing for the win was “Team Madmom” vs. “Boston Babe The Bumbles” and that Babe took that league win 130 to 52.  The Bumbles truly loved this Fantasy Football season.  She wrote about it more than I did.

I felt as far as training was concerned, I covered all the bases possible and since I didn’t receive any training questions (and I decided to take some time to wallow in self-pity for a while), I just played and kept an eye on all the players.

The final league, Momspective III had ME vs. “Team Dream” and I’m thrilled (come on, I can’t help it – I was the trainer ;) ) that I won that league 91 to 77.  I had to win ONE of them!  This was my baby and even I played each week.  I have to say, I was in a total of four leagues, since I also participated in my neighborhood league where I was the only girl and the winner gets some serious cash.  I lost.  Miserably.  That’s not going to happen again.

For anyone that wants to learn a few key items about the sport, today is the day to glue yourself to ESPN, much like I have been since 9 this morning.  They call it “Black Monday” and today is the day all the coaches get fired.  It’s devastating for some but thrilling for most.

All season long, it’s been what football lovers speculate as we get closer to the playoffs.  Well, it’s playoff time and there are some HUGE changes happening.  Changes I don’t think anyone expected.  Being from Upstate NY, I know quite a few Buffalo fans, my step-father being one of them and it was just announced that the entire coaching staff was canned.  I have to admit, it felt good to be there for that breaking news so I got to relay it to some folks this would be of interest to.

If you can’t or don’t want to tune into ESPN on TV, check out ESPN on the web.  I know there were a good number of people who wanted to join my training leagues but contacted me a bit too late.  To those of who who did, look for the announcement when Fantasy Football kicks off next year.

I also noticed that a lot of women got some help from their spouses this year.  Tisk, tisk.  While I love that it’s bonding you, I also wanted you to figure it out on your own so I’ll be creating a couples series, featuring 12 players per league.  Six will be the female and the other six their spouse.  If you’re not comfortable taking that advanced step, I’ll still have my original training series for women to join but there’s nothing like a healthy competition to keep the relationship interesting.

I want to thank all of you who helped me get this going this year.  I started my beta league last year with local women from Charlotte, NC and we really had a great time.  We even made it into the Charlotte Observer (I have about 50 copies lol) and this year marked the first year I went national.  Everyone did a great job and I had a fantastic job and once again, I’d like to congratulate the winners from this season!

  • Julie, you totally rock as our league commissioner! I had a great time playing in the Momspective II league and look forward to participating in future leagues. I’d love to move on to an advanced league, but my hubby has no interest(and didn’t help me). Maybe you’ll have enough interest to form a mixed sex, non-couples advanced league??? A side benefit for me was that my daughters started watching the games with me each week and now are interested in football. My 17 y/o daughter had fun trash talking with the boys at school about teams and players. It’s cool that now I get to share my love of sports with my kids.

  • It was fun Julie! I was in a league with just my husband and myself, and I beat him into the ground. The final game wasn’t close until the last 5 minutes, and one of his guys didn’t catch a pass. I won by 2.15 points, but I have my trophy now, and bragging rights for a year!

What an awesome idea. Sadly, my boy, Jim Zorn was possibly the first to go. At least they waited until he got off of the plane.

Thank you, thank you. It was a pleasure winning this season! I also participated in a league with my husband and 4 other guys whom I did not know. My hubby came in 5th and I beat the guy who had led the entire season and won that league too! 2-0 in my first fantasy football season. Not too shabby ;0)

Too bad in the real world my dreamboat Wes Welker hurt himself and is out, hurting the Pats’ chances going forward – I know – you don’t feel bad for me.
