Kindergarten Is Only ONE MONTH AWAY!

*Sigh*

I can’t believe it.  I honestly can not believe it.  I was looking at my plans for the next few months because I want to try to get a trip to visit my family in before school starts and I found out that school starts here August 18th!!  WOW!  I’m from Upstate NY, and we always went back after Labor Day so when I found out I have just one more month before my little man starts school, I just about burst into tears.

I remember my first day of school.  He’s gone to “Mother’s Morning Out” and preschool, so I’m not too worried about him adjusting but for some reason the fact that he’s going into Kindergarten is mind blowing.  It’s epic.  Monumental.  On August 18th, Jacob will start his first day of school.  Real school.  Buses, lockers, schedules. He’ll form relationships and make memories that will last a lifetime.

All summer long we kept saying he’ll be going into Kindergarten “Next year” and when I realized that “Next year” is actually “Next MONTH“.   I had just the smallest of panic attacks.  Just a wee bit.  Okay, so I wrapped my arms around him, kissed him a thousand times and cried that he’s always going to be my tiny little baby as he tried as hard as he could to keep me from slobbering all over him.

So now what?  What am I supposed to do? I remember going to school.  I remember every year it was a big deal.  We’d get all excited and head to the store to grab an Icee and get new school clothes and supplies.  Okay.  I can do that.  Where’s the list?

I did what any parent would do.  I Googled it. I know I don’t want to have to run around all over town so I hopped on over to the Target website and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw they have an entire section devoted to going back to school.  The beauty of modern times is that you don’t even have to go to a store if you don’t want to.  You can order all of it online.

NICE.  There it is!  I LOVE TECHNOLOGY! I got this list from the school’s web page so I know exactly what the school is looking for.  I can take this entire list on over to Target.com and get all the supplies I need shipped right to my door.  The clothes, back pack and lunch box (Do we still call them lunch boxes?  Do we still pack lunches?) all have to be bought in-store (because I want to) but the miscellaneous items that made school shopping a nightmare are no longer a worry!

School shopping each year is special.  It’s part of growing up.  It’s not just for girls and the whole “we love to shop” cliché, because I don’t like to shop.  This is  school shopping.  I was recently talking to my friends about when we were kids and we were talking about school shopping.  These are the same friends I have known since Kindergarten and Elementary school.  We all had memories and stories and most involved wanting Icee’s, what shoes were in style and what type of Trapper Keeper we had.

I grew up in a small town and went to a small school and made a lot of very close friends.  I get back home as often as I can not just so my family can see my kids, but because I miss my family and my friends from school!  I graduated high school in 1995 and still talk to quite a few of them daily and see as many as I can when I visit . Like I said in the beginning of this post, I didn’t even realize school was coming so soon until I looked to see the calendar because I’m making plans to go see all of the people I went to school with.

I want to make Jacob’s first year of school special.  I want him to pick out his new back pack and lunch box (I hope he wants a vintage one and I hope he lets me pick it out).  My hope for my children is that they’ll lead a happy and healthy life and what’s most important to me is that they go to a great school, meet wonderful friends and form connections  that will carry on throughout their years.  If Jacob graduates and ends up moving to go to college or work -

*pause for realization that that might happen….still pausing…trying to breathe…gathering myself….okay*

Ahem.  Excuse me.  I just now realized that my child will be a grown up some day.  That makes me dizzy even thinking about it.  If my boys grow up and end up moving away *sob*, I want them to be like me.  I want them to take every opportunity they have to come see their family and to go to the local hangout and reconnect with their friends.

This is where it all starts.  The first day of school marks the first step of independence in Jake’s childhood *wah*.  I want to keep the back to school shopping a fun yearly tradition.  Since Target.com allows me to make all the schools required purchases online, I can make the in-store shopping experience something for us to look forward to.  I also want them to involve Icee’s, because Target has them and I always get one when I go there.

I am so proud that you my daughter aren’t a back-to-school Walmart shopper (joke: ‘Rollback’ is also how overweight Walmart shoppers get back to their cars), and I think people who do back-to-school shopping at Nordstrom’s are just pretentious. Target is a good middle of the road choice, especially online so you don’t have to actually go inside. But if I ever hear you pronounce it Targé I will disown you.

I love back to school. I hate the endless lists. I wish my kid went to that school! The list is so short!!!

If you are really looking at that list for school, you might want to double-check with the school because it says “2009-2010″ so that might be last year’s list.

First of all, Jacob is adorable…anyone ever tell you he looks like the little boy on Modern Family? I can’t believe school starts so early. You panic attacks are normal…but I hope thoughts of macaroni art and gold stars make you feel better. I love school supplies… there is nothing so full of promise as a blank notebook. I wish I still had my “Welcome Back Kotter” lunchbox…

Good times. Seems like yesterday that our girls were going to their first day of kindergarten. Now they’re well into middle school. Just think, there are a lot of good times for you coming up–plays, concerts, etc. I love going to band concerts (the youngest is a flautist). Now they’re getting into sports. The oldest went out for track this last spring. It was hard times when she didn’t make the team. But she is determined to train and make it next season.

Word of warning on those lists of school supplies. They’re never complete. I promise you, there will be a list given to you at some point with more stuff listed. I keep telling Becca to stop buying the stuff before school starts, because we ALWAYS end up going out for more within the first few days of school.

School —- that was a piece of cake. Wait till you have to help plan his wedding, now that’s the anxiety attack – then trying not to do the “ugly cry” during the ceremony knowing that he’ll always be a part of you, but now he belongs to his wife (as it should be) and you as a Mom did such a wonderful job he’s happy, independent and making his own life. The Mother / Son dance is one of those special moments. Enjoy the school days and get involved with PTA and being a ” Room Mom” especially if you are lucky enough to be a SAHM ( I was and loved going on field trips – I was on the board of the PTA all through my kids elementary years – baked and did crafts for the teachers) they are great memories. Enjoy each milestone along the way, they grow up too fast and you can’t go back and have a “do over”. From the heart of a Mom to a 30 year old and 24 year old.

Time has a way of slipping by without you noticing it. Before you know it he’ll be going on his first date, then graduation and…

Oh the grow up so fast.

I remember that feeling of utter dismay when my own daughter started kindergarten. Right now I am feeling those same feelings, but intensified, as she gets ready to begin her freshman year in high school in just a few short weeks!
By the way, your son is adorable!

I know just how you feel. It seems I felt the exact same way just yesterday and now, my “baby” boy goes back to school here in Texas on August 23rd to begin his SENIOR year! Cherish this time, it goes by waaaaaay to fast.

August 18th! Yikes! That’s still summer. We live in Upstate NY so yes, we go back after Labor Day. Kindergarten is such a big step. Our youngest will be in 3rd grade and starting a new school. They just grow up so darn fast. Good luck with your back to school shopping and oh, ya, I remember having a Trapper Keeper too!

First of all, I love your Dad’s comment! :D

Second, I can so totally relate, I dread the day my Lucas starts school, I remember when Chakai started school 5 years ago, I literally cried on her first day, so embarrassing, I was known as the weepy mom from some time.. :D

As for school supplies shopping, you guys are really lucky you can do that online, we don’t have stores that have online shopping as a feature yet, so yeah we go through that nightmare shopping stage. Let me tell you, it is impossible to find a #2 pencil a month before school starts!

I love that picture of Jacob! He is so adorable, he’ll break a lot of hearts one day.. :)
