Hugs

Today I realized the importance of a good hug. Usually towards the end of every trip to visit my family I get stressed. I’m ready to go home yet sad to leave. This is when I have to make sure I see everyone I hadn’t and some I just have to see again before I go, so I’m all over the place.

I met an old friend for lunch today and god bless her, she listed to every complaint I had. She just sat and smiled and played with my kids and listened. She never judges, she’s always supportive. I don’t know how she does it, I’ve been annoying the heck out of myself with my whining.

So she walks me to my car and helps me put my boys in and we say our good bye’s as she heads back to work. Before she goes she gave me the best hug ever. It was strong and supportive and exactly what I needed, even though I didn’t know it. That hug let me know it’s okay for me to be a little psycho. She understood and supported my misery and in that one quick moment I felt better.

That got me thinking about all the different hugs out there. I really think the hug is underrated. We need more hugs. I mean, I’m a hugger. I’m a very affectionate person. I love everyone, I really do. When I see someone, I hug them but there are so many different types out there. Here’s some examples:

The Mother Comforting Child Hug

The Mother Comforting Child Hug The Aren't we adorable pose hug

The hugging your friend's hubby hug

The hugging your friend's spouse hug

Drunk Hug

The "A few too many" hug

The friend forever hug

Of all the different hugs of the world, each one makes a difference. Notice how everyone is always smiling, and it’s not necessarily because of the cameras. A hug feels good. When you’re happy, when you’re sad. When you suffer loss or win the big game. A hug is versatile, therapeutic. Have you been hugged lately? I strongly suggest it. Wrap your arms around someone you care about and hold on tight, you’ll be glad you did.

Saw on twitter that you wrote about hugging today–and I wrote about the same topic. Weird, huh? So I had to come here and check it out. Great photos! The hugging your friend’s hubby is so perfect. I call that the half hug! Thanks for a GOOD laugh. I needed one today. I just stumbled you.

I hug dh and kids all the time, but am a bit less free with others…not because I don’t like giving hugs, but because I go by how others feel about receiving them.

Your son is adorable, and his look is just priceless!

I got a mouth hug last night. That felt pretty good, but I do not have a picture…

NO matter how crazy your day is…take the time to wrap your arms around the ones you care about…
Sometimes words aren’t needed to let them know you care.
Those are the hugs that make you feel safe…

Hey! I gave you an “I’ll love you forever hug” yesterday!
Gotta remember I was raised a WASP…you know how it goes, you worked at the airport: European families meet each other noisily with hugs & kisses all around; WASPs politely nod and shake hands, if they’re REAL close, maybe a peck on the cheek. xxxoooxxx

And don’t forget the “little-arms-around-the-neck hug” — the amazing gift we get from those new to hugging… our babies. :)

Great post! Don’t forget to hug older people. They don’t get much touching usually.

  • This is hilarious! I love the hug your spouse’s husband!
