Fitness Friday – It Really Does Make A Difference
I’ve always talked about my eating habits and felt that because I’ve had such great success with my weight loss using just portion control (with the occasional Atkins/South Beach boost if I have an event and want to get some extra pounds lost because of the burger or three I may or may not have consumed), that I was healthy. I was truly shocked when I went in for my Gatorade GSSI testing (viewable HERE – it’s both hilarious and boring from what I’m told) and found out that although I’m healthy, my body fat percentage is higher than I expected.
Following the test, I spoke with Kimberly White, PhD, who is the Senior Scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) and she gave me some tips on diet and nutrition. I’ll be featuring sound clips from this video as well as some other information given to me on the Wii Mommies Blog Talk Radio Show today at 1PM EST and encourage you all to join.
I’m also going to talk about my big week and play sound clips that I believe will help all of us understand diet and fitness better. I have to warn you, sometimes these clip sounds choppy and sometimes they don’t. Also, I will NEVER make a career in film. The camera shakes like I have Tourette’s Syndrome.
Below is some video that shows my excellent film skills.

I’ve tried lots of diets, but my body keeps rejecting them.

Damn, our new firewall is keeping me from seeing it. I’ll have to check it out when I get home.

Isn’t it funny how you think you’re doing great, but when you see a true body fat analysis, you realize that your not doing as great as you thought?
I went through that recently also when we started seeing a new nutritionist. She did a bioempedence test, and both of our BF% was higher than we thought.

Watching the video now. You are awesome! Since this testing was provided by people who want you to buy their Gatorade product, I was not shocked that they really tried to drive it home that you need carbs before and during exercise. I don’t think its true, since if you are on a low carb diet your body will burn fat for fuel rather than carbs..so there are at least two legitimate paths to the same destination.

Resistance training is SO important! A decade ago when I got a personal training certification, they pointed out that while your diet is the big factor in determining weight loss, body composition, once someone has a healthy weight, is in a big part determined by manipulating your muscle mass through resistance training. A quality diet (lower fat, with that fat percentage made up of “healthy” fats, keeping control of the carbs, lots of fruits, veggies, lean protein – you know the deal) will assist in keeping body fat in check, but if it’s changing composition you’re after, yep, resistance training. Dr. White’s totally right on – when someone starts resistance training, or raises their intensity, you will be sore for a couple of days, but you don’t (and shouldn’t) have to kill yourself either. Consistency is the key (but isn’t it always?). Personally I do it two to three times a week, and while I don’t know my own body comp, my thighs and rear feel pretty firm, and that’s a good sign!

when it comes to health it’s great to be boring. Some people are really big on carbs after exercise and I just don’t get it.
