(Why yes, my site has been redesigned!  My very talented friend Amanda did it,
contact her for pricing and questions!)

I’ve been talking to quite a few people about my weight loss using the Nintendo Wii Fit with Blance Board and one of the biggest questions I get (besides my routine) is about the diet I used.  I thought I’d take the time here to give you some tips and tricks that worked for me.

For the first 11 weeks, I was on the South Beach Diet.  I do credit that with the fact that I lost so much weight so fast,it was a good ‘jump start’, but I was MISERABLE.  Eating high protein is expensive and I’m not really a meat eater, so it was a very difficult experience for me.

I found lots of great South Beach forums and got recipes for ‘mock’ waffles, muffins and cookies using Flax meal and other (expensive) yet low carb items.  When you’re eating cottage cheese for breakfast, a fake waffle is pretty stinkin’ good.

I only lost about 10 pounds in that 11 weeks.  I was using the Wii Fit and onlly playing the games, unlocking everything and enjoying myself.  I think I over did some of the meal ideas I got.  I figured because it was low carb, I could eat as much as I wanted and so I did.

Once I realized the South Beach wasn’t working for me yet the Wii Fit was, I decided it was time for a strategy change.  I decided to try portion control.  Not just talk about it, but really DO it.

When I’d serve up dinner to my family, I’d use the super small appetizer plates we have (from 1970) instead of  a full size plate.  When I went to a fast food restaurant, I’d get the kids’ meal instead of the Value meal.  At a sit down restaurant, I asked for a box be delivered with  my meal and I immediately packed half of the food up in it.

I was hungry for about 2 weeks, but gradually noticed myself getting full on those half portions.  Not only was the weight starting to fall off, but I was saving a ton of money!  I had the ‘out of site, out of mind’ thing going for me and I also had an entire second meal waiting for me for later!

If I was serving my family up something especially unhealthy (PIZZA) that I knew I couldn’t resist, I’d eat my portion before they started eating and I’d use the time they ate dinner to get my workout on the Wii Fit in.  I know a lot of people would prefer to sit and have dinner with their family, but doing this on occasion enabled me to get my workout in (kid free) and was less stressful on my husband since everyone was happily eating away.

I need potatoes to survive.  I love fast food.  I think that because I wasn’t depriving myself of my favorite foods, I was less miserable.  After a few weeks, I noticed I was full and half the plate wasn’t even finished.  I was using the Wii Fit for about an hour a day and eating what I wanted, only about 1/2 to 1/3 what I was eating previously.

The weight came off fast and has stayed off.  I over-indulged during the holiday season but am back to watching how much I eat and I use the Wii Fit every day.  I don’t have the time to use it for an hour aday anymore (I wasn’t blogging then lol) but I’ll use it throughout the day in 10-15 minute shots or I’ll shoot for 30 consecutive minutes.  I feel great and hope to reach my goal weight of 127 soon!

    Julie -

Thanks for being so open! It really help me to hear that REAL people can do this… then I know I can too!

  • Awesome new look for the blog! LOVE IT!

Ever since I read your “How I Lost 60 Pounds…” post about using portion control because and I quote, “I eat like a four year old” that’s what I’ve been doing!

Because I too eat like a four year old…bring on the goldfish crackers and Batman fruit roll-ups! LOL

Trying to add in more fiber like apples and oranges though…

    Hi Julie,

    Are you feeling better?

    Love the new site design.

Thanks for sharing in your progress and success, with a lot of hard work I would like to be there soon. We have a Wii, but not the wii fit yet. Can’t wait to join you.

    Love the new look! :)

Portion control is definitely the key – that way you don’t feel ‘robbed’ of eating what you want. My aunt tried the South Beach diet, and while it works for many, it’s not for everyone – and my aunt was miserable while on that particular diet (probably for the same reasons you were). She then did Weight Watchers for just over a year and lost about 85 pounds – and has kept it off for about a year now.

For me, I was bad about not eating ANYTHING for breakfast, then maybe have a small lunch, but by dinnertime I was famished and would overeat. So now that I’m focused on a goal, and having fun with the WiiFit Mommies, I’m paying more attention to what I eat and how much…which of course is showing up in actual results! LOL!! I had to literally ‘force’ myself to eat something (healthy) for breakfast, but once I got on track with that, it becomes second nature – as does limiting the portions you eat, too.

I also had to ‘train’ myself to eat slowly…I have always been a speed-eater because I have too much to do…heh, heh! I’ve had to slow down so I’m not scarfing down my food, then ultimately eating too much, or still feeling hungry when I’m done. :)

Great work with the diet. Like you, I am miserable without potatoes and fast food. I think I might get a Wii Fit one of these days, it sounds like a great way to lose weight since it’s fun (I HATE exercise).

@Karen, Hmmm….not sure. I clicked the box in the side bar and it worked but I’ll poke around and see if it’s listed wrong somewhere else.

That link didn’t work for me. I was able to subscribe by clicking on the penguin with the orange rss picture. The envelope one won’t work. I also tried contacting you but it says that form has expired. Golly! LOL You can delete these comments if you want since they don’t pertain to the post subject.

@Karen, everything should be good now, I had to change the email sub to feedburner. Much appreciated!

  • What great, sensible advice that we ignore all too often! I’ve been doing the same over the past week – really paying attention to portion control – and its making a difference.

@Annette Piper, I’m so glad to hear that! Good luck! You should participate in Fitness Friday so we can see how it goes!

  • More inspiration, of course!

I’ve done the South Beach Diet, and Weight Watchers… and I am finding that trying to just do portion control works for me too! It is SO HARD!! LOL

I’m so glad you came into my life!! WOOT!

    Julie Reply:

@Jenn @ The Coupon Coup, Aww!!! I love you!

  • Sorry I’m late!

EXCELLENT tips! All those other diets might work for some people, but it won’t for others… for reasons you named. I have no self control or consistency like that. Plus they depress me, lol. Not everyone can stand the same kinds of foods for a long period of time. I KNOW that portion control works for me. Cutting out sugar does, too – but that is SO hard! I try to do the portion control with the sugar and that helps some.

Hope you’re having a great week!

I started at over 200 and now around 135 now. My goal is 127 (I’m 5’4)

Wow. You’ve done so well. I’ve done nearly 2 weeks (since we got it) religiously every day for just over an hour. So far I’m GAINING weight. Could this be muscle? I lost a stone from dieting for one month but the second and third I’ve only maintained it. Hoping this could at least tone up my flabby belly.
