I Got Diamond Earrings From A Random Waitress In Mexico

cancun

That’s me, screaming, with my very colorful “Mexico Skirt” that I bought in Cancun that night for that trip to that tiny, random unknown bar that tourists don’t go to.  As you can see in the background , we’re the only non-Mexicans in the bar and WE LIKED IT.

Ryan and I planned this trip with some friends (who shall remain nameless) because we wanted to.  Ha.  I don’t know how else to say that.  We flew to Cancun where we had a friend and stayed at his place.  He took us to the best non-tourisy places and I realized I don’t know how to pack and I had to buy that skirt.

I’m not going to talk about that trip, I’m just going to talk about that night (or what I remember of it).  We were at that bar, with no air conditioning and a great band.  Everyone was fantastic and I was crazy about our waitress (server?  Bar table chick?) and just couldn’t get enough of her.

She spoke a little English and I was very drunk (again, see picture above) and treated her the way I treat just about everyone all the time, like she was my all time favorite person in the world, because at that moment, she was.  She brought beers!  Beers that were like a quarter each (I think, I don’t remember paying.  I’ll say Ryan did).

We talked, we sweat (a lot) and we danced.  Just before we left, our waitress (I always forget the PC term they prefer, although I will tell you please don’t call a Flight Attendant a “Stewardess” or they’ll be very insulted) came up to me to say goodbye.

From what I remember, this woman was stunning.  She also had a very beautiful pair of earrings in her ears, that I kept complimenting her on.  As the bar closed and we prepared to leave, she clutched my hands in both of hers and told me in broken English that an American woman had never been to attentive and kind.  In her hands, she had her earrings.  She pressed them into mine (it hurt a little) and insisted that I keep them.

I tried to give them back, I tried to refuse them.  For one, that was WAY too generous for her to offer and secondly, my ears weren’t even pierced at the time.  She insisted and said some things I needed translated.  She was engaged to be married in a few weeks and wanted me to attend her wedding.  I tried explaining I couldn’t but I was also really drunk so told her I’d try to make an effort.

When the weeks passed and I thought about getting to that wedding, I realized we never exchanged names or information.   I couldn’t find that bar again without my friends help and I didn’t return to Cancun for at least another month or two after that.

I’ll always regret not going to that wedding, although how awkward would that have been?  I do have the earrings still and wear them when I can.  I get compliments on them when I do.  I just recently pierced my ears (about two years ago) and just went to take a picture of them but they came out all blurry so I took a picture of one of them.  Take a look-

It’s still blurry.  Diamonds (real or no, probably not) are hard to photograph with a cell phone and I don’t have another camera.  They’re a silver post with a flower diamond on the end.  A large circle with five pedals.  Of all the gifts I’ve ever gotten, this holds in my top three.  I’ll tell you about the other one (a necklace in St. Thomas) in the next adventure I write!
