DAY NINE QUESTION

So I want to hear, what is the most unusual gift you’ve received?  It doesn’t have to be bad, just unusual. What was one of your favorite gifts? Do you think re-gifting is OK?

Ha.  Who’re you talking to?  Re-gifting.  You bet’cha!  I actually get excited when I get a gift I don’t like.  There’s not too much I need, I’m fairly low maintenance.  I don’t shop, most of my clothes are donated to me.  Anytime a friend decides she’s never going to fit in her jeans, I take them.  My friend gave me size 8′s 4 years ago and I’m just now fitting in them for the first time, so it’s like a while new wardrobe!

When I get a gift I don’t want, I think about who might.  If I can think of a person, I have a spot I keep them so I can re-gift them another time.  If I can’t think of anyone, I research where it might be from and then I return/exchange it.

My favorite gift…hmm…

Uh.  Wow.  I’m thinking.  I’m a big fan of large amounts of cash.  Every time I’m handed a large amount of cash, I declare it my favorite gift.  So now you know what to get me for Christmas. ;)

I do have a great story for a non Christmas gift.  One year my hubby and I were in NY and it was Valentine’s Day.  We were at a hotel for something and there was a bear on the bed.  I saw the bear as he was on the phone with his grandmother and I said, “Look!  The hotel put a bear in here for Valentines day!” and he looked at me and smiled.

A few minutes later I walked up to the bear and noticed a beautiful diamond necklace around it’s neck.  In a moment of shock I said “Oh my gosh!  This bear has a diamond on it!  Do you think the hotel knows they put this on the bear?!”, at which point my husband, still on the phone with his grandmother, reached out and pat me on a head in a gesture that said “At least you’re pretty” and I realized it was he who put the bear there and the necklace around its neck.  I’d tell you what happened next, but this is a family site.

The most unusual gift I can break to 3 separate times.  One year someone got me a suede jacket.  At that point, I hadn’t had meat in 20 years and basically burst into tears when I saw it.  I pulled the whole ‘Meat is Murder’ thing and threw a fit.  Years later, I still have that jacket.  I wore it Saturday night while I was eating a burger.

Another time, my sister thought it’d be funny to put together a gift basket filled with cheap blue eyeshadow and kit kat bars.  It would have been funny had I gotten other gifts, but for some reason that didn’t happen.  I got the usual from my parents and that was good but I think it was in the first phase of my phasing out gifts so that was all I got that year.  LOVED the Kit Kats, ate them all.  Can’t remember what I did with the eyeshadow.  I have blue eyes so I don’t typically wear blue shadow.

Finally, the most baffling was a friend I had years ago.  He was a great friend and decided to use a Christmas to declare his undying love for me.  He gave me a huge speech about how well he knows me and this deep connection he thinks we have and he presented me with diamond earrings.  I opened them, laughed, handed them back and said, “You don’t know me that well Buddy.  My ears aren’t pierced.”

I’d like to take a second to highlight a blog I just came across.  I must look at several hundred a day.  I just glance over my RSS Feeds, Entrecard or check something out through Twitter.  Today I stopped at Ramblings of a Redneck Woman and it’s the first time I’ve read a post that had me sobbing uncontrollably.  I can handle a lot but I couldn’t handle what this woman just went through.  I want to hop on a plane and go give her a hug.  Just typing this has tears spilling from my eyes.  Not to bring everyone down but this dear, sweet, wonderful woman just went through the worst possible experience and her strength and willingness to share with the world astounds me.  Please take a moment to read her last few entries from this past week and pray for her and her family.  I can’t even go back there right now, I’m a mess.
