DAY FIVE QUESTION

Today, make a blog post about what you do to give back during the holidays. Do you volunteer your time? If so, please tell us where. What do you do to teach your children the true meaning of the holidays?

I typically volunteer all year round. I have to admit, since getting pregnant with then having Joshua, my activities have decreased. Animals are my thing. I’ve lived in Charlotte for almost 7 years and I’ve been a volunteer with various organizations the entire time. The Golden Retriever Rescue Club of Charlotte, the Humane Society of Lincoln County and the Furball Lady animal rescue. If you’ve ever gone into a Petsmart on the weekend and have seen the animals set up in the store up for adoption, that’s us. I never did the weekend adoptions, I was a foster. I rescued and placed 71 animals in 2006.

Seriously. His face is filthy but it’s still cute.
I’ve always involved Jacob. Josh is only 7 months old, so I’m trying to teach him proper treatment of animals. Jacob bottle fed his first orphan at a year old. He’s kind, loving and gentile and I’m so proud of him. The animals I’ve kept for myself (Apollo and Tribute) are great with kids. All I ever hear when I have a play date is the amazement over how the cat just sits there and takes the torture the kids dish out.

I DON'T recommend taking in 6 labs at once. They grow fast.

We also donate to all the local charities, and I’ve taken the boys to nursing homes so the older folks can feel the joy children bring. I basically bathe the boys in hand sanitizer when I do though-I get paranoid about hospitals. I get a lot of people asking how it is I haven’t kept all the animals I’ve rescued. It’s simple. They’re a pain in the ass to clean up after. One summer we found 19 homeless newborn kittens. I was the newborn girl the vets called to bottle feed and they were so tiny, I figured, ‘Hey! This’ll be fine! They’ll turn 8 weeks and get adopted out no problem.”

WRONG. Once I got the 19 kittens, almost all of them were black or black and white. No one adopts those kitties. Except at Halloween, when we won’t adopt them out (people are MEAN at Halloween), the only kitties that go fast are the orange, grey or calico’s. I had those kitties FOREVER. I had some until I got pregnant with Joshua and my doc forced me to stop rescuing due to the high risk of toxoplasmosis.

  • That same summer, I was BEGGED to take in 6 four week old labs (Jake’s holding one above). I couldn’t say no, LOOK AT THEM! Well, I had them for 4 weeks. Luckily, everyone single one was adopted out the day they were old enough to be, but they grew big and they grew fast. By 8 weeks, they were jumping all over Jake and he’d stand on the coffee table to avoid their lovin’. I now have a one-dog-at-a-time limit (two, tops).

So while I don’t really do anything holiday specific, I do volunteer year round. I am sure to involve my children and because of that, I have 2 very gentle and compassionate boys. Well, Jake’s compassionate. Josh still beats stuff. Because kids and babies are so flippin’ adorable, I shall now post a ton of pictures.

He found the shirt, insisted on wearing it.

    Yeah.

    Yeah.

Ouch. Face hurts. Can't stop smiling.

Okay, I seriously have HUNDREDS of these. I don’t have any of Josh yet, but here’s a video of him from a few days ago. The kitty is in the back. A few moments after I recorded it, he attempted to drag the cat across the room.
