A Blast From the Past-my Weekend Flashback Series
Once again, we’re flashing back to 1995 to check out some of the wisdom that shot out of my mind as a teen.

A Blast From the Past
What is the 90′s?
It’s a mixture of the ’60s through the ’80s (scary thought). You see the long-hair hippie tie-dyed stoner ’60s groove, the funky ’70s Electric Chick Magnet disco look, and for some god-awful reason, the ’80s. There’s no description for the ’80s, they were just THERE.
I’m here to tell you why the ’80s sucked, and why the ’60s and ’70s aren’t that bad. Let’s just get this ’80s stuff out of the way. Face it! Look at the music! New Kids on the Block? I’m nauseous just saying it! Debbie Gibson? Tiffany? And these groups were POPULAR! At least I had sense enough to detest them! I was still listening to 95X Classics!
And how about the clothes? Even I got trapped in that! All I picked up were what my friends were wearing, and what I saw on MTV.
Blue eye shadow, 20 pairs of socks LAYERED over your pinch rolled jeans. Dress shoes, socks and jeans all worn at the same time! WHAT WAS WRONG WITH US?
One plus was the McDonalds had two pickles on their burgers, but how many people really like pickles?
If you don’t quite catch what I”m saying, just look at the ’80s commercials. “Hey Bob! Did you catch that new rockin’ to the ’80s tape yet? It’s got great tunes like ‘Lost in Your Eyes’ by Debbie Gibson.” Now any commercial calling ANTHING by Debbie Gibson great needs to be shot. But for some reason, people are fighting to revive the ’80s! Let it die! Give the ’90s something to look back on!
Now for the ’70s. I agree, it’s not for everybody. But it’s OK by me.
The only thing that annoys me is the wanna-be disco freaks. I love the Bee Gees, don’t get me wrong. And ‘Saturday Night Fever” is one of my all-time classics. Bur a 14-year-old born in the ’80s just following the crowd gets my gourd.
I’m talking the real ’70s classics. Those are cool. If they weren’t I never would have heard of them!
Look at the Brady Bunch! yes, it’s typical of me to bring them up. I’m not OBSESSED with them; I just think they’re groovy. I can’t help it if I want Greg! My Point is, that they were so popular for so long, they even made a cheesy movie out of them!
Leisure suits, polyester-it’s affordable! Listen to the music. You can’t help but “shake your booty,” and this ain’t no “Jive Talkin’.” They had relaxed hair, for the most part. Not a teased 10 gallon of aerosol hair spray look, like in the ’80s
I’ll even reflect on those ’60s for a moment. Most of those bands are still around today! Look at the Grateful Dread! You’d think they would be by now! But no! They’re still truckin’!
Looking at the ’60s, you can see the main reason people want them back-Woodstock. And I dont’ mean some cheese conert calling itself Woodstock ’94 just to get a lot of money. I’m talking about full-blown-hippies-in-love-with-everything, running-naked-through-mud-puddles while Jimi Hendrix cranks out the coolest version of “The Star Spangled Banner” ever heard! Now that’s something we need!
As you can see, the ’90s are not really original . The ’60s had its look, the ’70s its own and the god-awful-please-erase-this-time-period-from-your-records-’80s its own. But the ’90s is just some funky retro-blend of the three that they call “grunge, ” “alternative” or something along those lines. I’m sure a group of retro-somethings will protest, but what I say is true. Sorry. I just like what I like. It doesn’t mean I’m gonna dye my hair blue and dress like a geek.
That’s only when I go out!

Hmmmm – a little revisionist history, eh? If I remember correctly (and I do) you liked New Kids On The Block. For a while, anyway… especially Joey McIntyre.

Don’t be cruel, you remember my ‘New Kids Suck’ Tee, don’t you?
Ha ha that was a great read! My husband always says he’s ASHAMED of the 80s and how he looked then. And he can’t stand 80s movies. I think those movies are great, they are so light-spirited and easy-going. Cool blog, by the way!
Johanna’s last blog post..Weight Loss Tip of the Week: Motivation!
My best time was the 70s’. I liked the clothes, the hair, the makeup and the music. Now the 60s’ were good but looking back ,the clothes needed help and the makeup was strong. the Music was the only thing good. the 80s’ started out fine. Toward the end something happen,(oh, I was living in Europe most of the 80s’). Now I remember, when I returned to the USA, there was some strange things out there. I wanted to go back to Europe!! Let’s just skip the 90s’,What happened to peoples eyes and Ears? hehe

Love your flashbacks, Julie!
Such a refreshing take on different era’s…
I was a teenager in the 90′s and yes they are hard to define. I guess you are right it is a combination of a few different decades. I miss being a kid. I think the eighties were the best.
yahoo you put the word Groovy in your posting! Very groovy. I think peeps would be happier if they found a way to put the word groovy in their everyday conversations.

I must stand up for Deborah Gibson, with help from my husband (cause the dj didn’t have it) her 90′s more mature music was our first dance for our wedding, LOL
Bwahahahahaha! there’s no way that’s really you in the picture!
I like SOME 80′s music, but the fashion was awful! I like the brady bunch too!
I loved the 80′s, they were so fun! Still love listening to the music, better than the stuff that is out now. The clothes weren’t anything I would wear now, but I loved them back then. Life was more laid back, happy, fun, tons of energy. Loved it. Neon and spiked hair rocked!
