My 16mo son has banged his head on things for most of his life! I really do believe it is self-soothing. He never took a pacifier, doesn’t suck his thumb, didn’t “take” to a blankie or stuffed animal – the main thing he does to fall asleep is bang around. He does it when he’s bored or sleepy, as well. The dr says he’s a-ok, and my mommy instincts tell me the same thing. I’m sorry it’s such a concern to you (and I know it was to me!), but I think it will be something that passes with time.

OMG! When I was reading through your post I was like, NO WAY! It’s like I could’ve written this post about a month ago… Lucas bangs his head on walls, pretty much everything too, but he grew out of it and only bangs his head on my chest or other people’s chests and sometimes gives you a head bang as a sort of his way of saying hello… but I don’t think you have to worry, as long as he doesn’t seem to be getting hurt then I guess it’s fine… As for your 3 year old who seems to have a thing for guns, I’d sit him down and tell him what’s the deal and why it’s not cool to use guns that way, and hope for the best.

i know, not very useful advice… lol… :d

Well, my mom told me that she was a “head banger” as she called it when she was a baby and she turned out alright…I guess, but we don’t need to get into that here!

As far as the school, I don’t know. It’s too bad that we can’t control how other people raise their kids. I just wish we didn’t have to deal with these kinds of things in preschool. I don’t know what to tell you, but I’m interested in how you deal with this. I’m not sure how I’ll handle these things when my almost 1 yr old boy gets to the gun stage.

Re: 9 mo : Definitely mention it to the doc, but I would think it will be fine unless he actually starts to hurt himself.

Re: older child – yeah, I’ve got one of those too – a follower and into things I’d really prefer he didn’t. He’s getting older now (10) and is starting to show some of the responsibilty that we hoped would come in time. Boys are a bit of trial I think and we can only try our best and hope it all works!

Julie – I forgot to mention the head-banging… Little Dude still does it at times – when he is frustrated or overly excited. He used to do more of it, and others have said, I was told it would go away as he learned to process everything – he was just overloading.

The little bit he still does is almost non-existent, and truthfully, I think it is rare because he realized, “wait, that hurts!”
