Fitness Friday – Training For the EA SPORTS Active 5K!

fitness-friday-button-new

What ever have I gotten myself in to?

The EA SPORTS Active 5K challenge, that’s what.

I’ve been asked and have accepted the position of Community Leader for the Charlotte, NC area.  More details to follow in the future as that gets under way, but EA SPORTS wants to invite you to take part a 5K in your area!  They’re also still looking for those interested in being community leaders, so head on over to the EA SPORTS Active Website for details!

I was hanging out with a friend the other day and he decided he was going for a run.  I thought to myself, “I know how to run!  I did it once in gym class and I used to rock the run on EA SPORTS Active, I can do this!”  I told him I was going to run with him and he outright laughed at me.  We’ve known each other for years and apparently knows me better than I know myself.

Insisting I can not only run, but keep up for the 3.1 miles (totaling 5K), he was left with no choice but to allow me to join him.  I put on my cutest running outfit, complete with my EA SPORTS Active tee and new sneaks that looked positively ADORABLE and told the hubs I was headed out (he seemed to giggle at this, too.  What’s with these guys?)

I get outside and he asks if I’m ready.  Well, NO.  Not YET.  Geez.  All my neighbors are outside and I don’t want anyone actually WATCHING me.

Fine.  We’ll start by walking.

Now we’re at the end of the road.  “Ready to run yet?”, he asks.

“Uh…well…I mean, there’s a HILL, so shouldn’t we wait until we get up that?”

He he he.

Top of the hill – end of the street.  I’m left with no choice now.  I start to jog.

“Hmmm…” I think to myself, “This isn’t so bad…yeah, I can do this.  If I remember to breathe, I can totally run.  Yeah.  I’m running!  Look at me!  I’m running!  Oh.   Wait.  Hmm…breathing seems a bit tougher.  Geez, my side is starting to hurt.  I hate this.”

Out loud, I say “I’m bored now.  I wanna walk.  I hear women lose more weight if they alternate running and walking.  You go ahead.”

After a hearty eye roll and an “I told you so”, we decided that maybe instead of just diving into a 5K run, I need to actually get READY for a 5K run.  We’ve laid out a game plan to walk every night for a week, then power-walk for a week and a half, followed by a light jog and then a run.

I’m also going to follow the training program designed by EA SPORTS Active trainer, Gerard Recio, who has designed a training program (viewable in PDF format off the EA SPORTS Active Website) including 18 great EA SPORTS Active workouts to help you get into shape and get me ready for my 5K challenge.

After all, I want to LEAD this 5K, not the last to cross the finish line!
